July 2016 – First Painted Stories Workshop Aurukun

Painted Stories is a unique approach to language documentation and revitalisation developed by Artist Gina Allain and Pama Language Centre Linguist Louise Ashmore. Painted Stories workshops provide a safe and stimulating environment for participants to remember, reflect and creatively record aspects of their personal history and cultural knowledge that they want to pass on to future generations. Using a range of methods from language documentation, oral history and art therapy workshops provide an opportunity for Elders and younger participants to interact with art materials, archival resources, and photographs to prompt memory and to transfer their stories into paintings, drawings, and digital media.
