In 2016 Guugu Yimidhirr teacher Lillian Bowen’s classes performed their school plays in Guugu Yimidhirr for the first time. The Preps play was the story of how the giant groper Ninhinhi created languages. We painted an enormous Nhinhinhi puppet with an opening mouth who swallowed up all the children on the stage. Lillian Bowen and Karin Calley sat in her caravan late into the night working on the scripts and spent the whole weekend in her classroom making the puppet. It was great fun and the audience loved to hear the children acting their parts in Guugu Yimidhirr. Here’s a little film we made about the Nhinhinhi play.
