1990 – The First Cape York Summit, Lockhart River

For a long time the Elders of Cape York Peninsula have been talking about the need to keep our languages and culture strong.

We want our children to succeed in mainstream Australia. We want them to retain their distinct cultures, languages and identities as peoples.

We are not content to achieve social and economic development but lose our identities, languages or cultures – we do not want assimilation.
