A Collaboration with Ngak Min Health and Wik Mungkan Elders and Youth

Circle of Security is part of the Language for Life project, a collaboration with Ngak Min Health to develop Ancestral Language resources to support the health and wellbeing of Cape York Youth. Circle of Security interactive Augmented Reality posters present a series of written and spoken health statements developed by Wik Mungkan Elders and youth, with links to additional information and resources. This web version of the poster is still in progress. Audio and links for each statement will be uploaded soon.

English Translations

1. Caring for each other and keeping our connection with our ancestors, our stories, our languages and our culture helps to keep us all well and strong.

2. When she is pregnant, no alcohol, no drugs, only good nutritious food and water to prepare our bodies for new life.

3. Every child needs to have at least one  safe person in their family, someone they can talk to and tell their troubles to, someone they can trust and rely on when they need help.

4. Adults need to take responsibility for organising regular health checks and vaccinations for our children, for our old people and for ourselves.

5. Listen to what your children are trying to tell you. Try to understand what is really going on inside them and think about why they are behaving in an angry or destructive way. Are they suffering? Are they sick?

6. A family needs to learn how to help each other to prevent, manage and treat chronic diseases. Some conditions that many of us suffer from are: Diabetes, smoking, heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer

7. Our dogs are important to us. We need to make sure they are healthy too. If we have a vet in the community we can ask them to come and do a health check for our dogs.

Dogs can carry diseases and parasites that can make us sick, so we can teach our dogs to stay outside the house and we should not let our dogs sleep on our beds.

8. A cut on your skin is real and you can see it. A hurt inside is also real, but you can’t see it. We need to care of ourselves to heal our wounds and we need to take care of the way we feel inside too.

9. Share respect and kindness. Mums, dads, aunties and uncles need to love and respect their children. Children need to learn to be kind and respectful of their elders too.

10. Take care of your family by taking care of yourself. Try to think first.  Risky behaviours such as gambling, drinking, using drugs and having unprotected sex will hurt the people you love.

11. We need to take care of our teeth. We need to take special care of our children’s teeth! We need to keep our teeth healthy and strong for our whole lifetime. If we give the children sugary drinks like Coca-Cola and let them eat sweets, their teeth will rot away. Remember:

Brush your teeth every morning and every night before bed.

Drink plenty of clean water from the tap.

No sugary drinks and sweets.

Have your teeth and your children’s teeth checked by the dentist twice each year.

12. Send your anger and sorrow to the sky or into the ground, not through your fists or your feet.  Never take it out on yourself or the people around you. Learn to breathe through your anger and frustration.
