Guugu Yimithirr Lesson 12

Movement to a person and talking to a person

This lesson about going to a person and talking to a person.

We know one ending that means “to”: the ending –wi or –bi. We recall that they are the same ending, but we use –bi after a consonant sound: we say Johnnywi but Agnesbi.

The ending –wi/ –bi means different things:

  • a person owns something
  • something is given to a person
  • to a place or at a place

But there is another ending meaning “to”: the ending –:gal.

Visiting a person and talking to a person: –:gal

When we go to a person, or when we are already with a person, we use the ending –:gal.
